Prism’s June meeting started with an excellent critique by Carl Symes (President of Spectrum Photographic Club) of Round One of the Prism Open Competition, in which Carl gave his valued and experienced opinion on our images as well as sharing some ideas on cropping and composition.
The subject of ‘Open’ was picked for this meeting to try and reduce the pressure on members due to the extra activities and exhibitions organised during the Festival of Photography. The Open category gives members a chance to put in their favourite images on any subject, and as such the competition is thrown wide open with a wide variety of subjects showed off the huge range of talent and artistic flare of our members.
This month’s competition was won by Olivier Dorey with a beautiful image entitled ‘Flower Power’. Olivier was riding high this week as he had also just been awarded First place in the Prism Open judged by Carl. Olivier described how he took the image using lighting from a torch, and the members were delighted to glean some ideas on how Olivier crafted his image.
Hot on his heels is Sarah Finch who won second place with her fabulous picture of a Kestrel. Sarah was also feeling great as she was also awarded second place in the Prism Open. Well done to both Olivier and Sarah for their double win.
Third place was a great character shot entitled ‘The look’. The image was well thought out with a great juxtaposition between the subject and the advertising picture. This excellent portrait was Rob Grant’s first placing in the league competition.
Jayne Priaulx was awarded fourth place with her image of a derelict bathroom, entitled ‘Non-suite’. The colours of the peeling paint and the view through the window all worked perfectly for an intriguing and interesting shot.
Carol Paes (yes, that’s me) was the fifth winner of the night. The image entered was a vertical panorama of five different images also taken of a derelict building. Blending five pictures together created a much more interesting image and was able to capture all three floors of the building.
