“To P or not to P, that is the question” or perhaps more specifically, how can I win a competition using a subject matter conveying the letter P? Barring the obvious and possibly offensive answers, Prism members looked further than a peapod popping with peas and poisoning pigeons in the park and came up with some positively perfect pictures.
After three years as president it was a real pleasure to hand over to the capable hands of Carol Paes who led the packed meeting and suggested that we each took turns in critiquing the images after members had voted. As usual there was a great deal of banter and lots of laughter when members revealed some of the titles. (Use your imagination! Who says photography can be stuffy?)
Carol came fifth with her very clever Scrabble board, depicting a row of P’s. She was quick to point out that there weren’t 4 P’s in the game and that searching for the spare scrabble board had sorted that out. Albeit a light hearted shot, the composition and print quality was excellent putting her on the point’s ladder.
Jayne Priaulx was equally pleased to come fourth with a beautiful study of Pumpkins. Jayne is perhaps better known for her superb and often dramatic landscapes so this closely cropped still life was proof of her all round ability. The definition and colour accuracy was spot on and Jayne’s attention to detail made this a highly attractive shot.
Members laughingly agreed that Sarah Finch was stretching the name of her image a little too far when she entitled her shot “P shaped Pigeon”! This was a very sharp image of a pigeon in lift off mode and acknowledging the print’s superb quality members couldn’t agree that it was p shaped! Sarah came third on this round.
Terry Guerin and Rachel Lee tied for the honour of first place. Terry’s image of orange “Peel” was rich and had a real depth of quality to it. There was some debate as to whether the segment of peeled orange added or distracted from the main subject but nevertheless members agreed it was a very “appealing” shot and was a deserved winner. Prism was pleased to welcome back Rachel who has always given competitors a run for their money. Her set up shots are legendary and there she was, first time back and straight to the top with a highly professional study entitled “Painting”. Congratulations Rachel! Fancy another year off to give us “nil pointers” a chance?
