League subject April 'Still Life'

This month’s competition entitled “Still Life” was preceded by a session of Gadgets and Gizmos. Members bought along their favourite bits of equipment which ranged from top notch bits of kit to a black bin sack! This was a very useful and informative time when members were contributing with handy tips and demonstrations of their gadgets and gizmos. Pete Brehaut assembled his portable lighting set up and members were pleased to see how simple the procedure was. John Daykin demonstrated a great little portable flash unit that cost him a mere £12….a few years ago! Jon Bartlett talked us through his Filter system and explained the difference between extension tubes and lens converters. Annie Woodington’s kit was certainly geared up to her long haul trips and her empty bean bag camera rest was one of those items that would have worked well on a “Guess what this is?” competition! Her top of the range tripod made us all slightly envious and its light weight made it an obvious choice for travel use. This was club activity at its best, members learning from each other and sharing tips and warnings so that the very best and appropriate equipment can be chosen. The black sack?.... very useful for damp and dirty ground when you are getting down to it amongst the wild flowers!
It was a great pleasure to award newcomer Tessa le Gallez with 5th place with her “Hands Down”. This was an artistic shot of her jewellery stand, inverted and given a professionally executed background which helped to show the object at its best. Lighting and composition were both spot on, well done Tessa!
Olivier Dorey certainly has a gift for seeing things differently. His highly graphic two tone composition of two crayons was both stark and eye catching. The essence of the subject matter “Still Life” was certainly widely interpreted by members and Olivier produced his take on the subject in an exciting and highly technical way.
Also in joint third was Jeremy Stranger with “Bugs Life”. Jeremy produced an amusing composition which created a lot of queries from members as to exactly what it was. The image was produced in beautifully pastel shades with clever positioning of the wood shaving bugs (yes, you heard it here first!) Despite the light hearted subject matter, Jeremy as ever created a highly proficient image.
Terry Guerin’s second placed “Hanging “A” Around” puts her the top section of the league table. Her clever arrangement of wooden clothes pegs not only shows that she is a skilful photographer but perhaps she has too much time on her hands! It was a popular image with an element of fun and beautifully taken.
This month Roger Whitehead surged ahead in the league table with yet another top placed image. The quality of Roger’s photography is excellent in every way and his study of “An Oil Lamp” really reflected his attention to detail and his knowledge of light and post production editing.
Prism members are invited to The Guernsey Photographic Club on the 3rd May for the highly competitive Interclub.
